Downtown Millville Maurice River

Offical Millville City Website

The earliest settlers in the Millville area were woodcutters. They lived along the Maurice River in the 1700's. In 1790, the Union Company, formed by Henry Drinker and Joseph Smith, purchases 19,563 acres of land. They established a mill and built a dam to power its wheels. Today, this is the head of Union Lake. The lake is a pristine spot for fishing, sailing, canoeing, and enjoying nature.

In 1795, Joseph Buck acquired the Union Company mill and much of the land in the area. Colonel Buck envisioned the town with bustling mills to the West and comfortable homes to the east. He drew street plans, named the area Millville, and built his home on the Northeast Corner of High and Main Streets.

The Lee Glass plants, by James Lee, spurred Millville's growth. Built in 1806 on the southern banks of the Maurice Rover, Lee later sold the factory to Whitall Tatum and taken over Armstrong Cork Company in 1939, Kerr Glass, Foster Forbes, and American Can. It is the oldest working glass plant in the nation.

Dr. TC Wheaton opened a drug store on High Street in 1884. He left the drug store to take over operations and financing of an 8-pot furnace that began the Wheaton Glass Company. Today, Wheaton Glass has merged with Lawson-Mardon of Switzerland and is a leading, international glass and plastics manufacturer.
